This map is designed to offer a new modern cartographic interpretation to the Ukraine-Russia war by taking into account its main characteristics, fragmentation of the contact line and infiltrations and introducing a new map visualization technique: the heatmap opposed to plain polygons, which already some time ago has been suggested by some soldiers, that highlight how it's impossible to accurately describe what's happening at the front with only a red and gray zone without packing in them dozens of shades of situations, thereby making this system very confusing to viewers.
In this case, the heatmap represents a gradient of Russian infiltration capability, ranging from one-time infiltrations, to occasional, and to frequent/consistent, everyday infiltrations.
I don't have precise enough information on every part of the front to say for certain whether or how often infiltrations are happening there — I still try to make the best use of what information I do have available. The heatmap is meant as an alternative, more nuanced representation of that same underlying data, not a pixel-perfect record of what's happening at any single point: it's still built on the same information the polygons-based representation uses.
It is likely that the main system will be refined in the future.
This map is also designed to offer users with a much wider range of tools to improve situational awareness and information.
The frontline data is almost fully taken from @DeepStateUA, with me only slightly tweaking it to correct some areas according to my information, as well as low-quality/confusing drawings.
The map is currently in an early Work In Progress stage.
Consolidation: establishment and manning of semi-permanent positions.
Significant position: a position that engages in firefights, or otherwise affects its surroundings or the enemy's plans — i.e., the enemy has to account for it.
Mixed/layered pie: an area where positions of both sides overlap, often in a chaotic pattern.
Red zone: territory consolidated by Russia. Includes insignificant Ukrainian positions and inconsistent/infrequent Ukrainian infiltrations.
Gray zone: any of the following:
Uncolored (Ukraine): territory consolidated by Ukraine. Includes insignificant Russian positions and inconsistent/infrequent Russian infiltrations.
A zone turns red or uncolored (Ukrainian) when:
Undo/redo applies one stroke at a time while Draw is open, or one placed point at a time while Ruler is open.
